An Evening of Song!

Birse and Feughside Church

Thursday 3rd June, 7.30pm

 Kirsten Cairns, soprano
Matthew Brown, piano

Come along to hear old favourites - and some new!  The evening will be a mixture of Scottish songs, show tunes and well known operatic arias.  Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Free - retiring collection in aid of 'Forget me not'.

Kirsten (Kirsty!) Cairns is a professional soprano who spends most of the year working in the United States of America.  She studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow before becoming a performer and stage director out in Boston.  Matthew Brown, composer, pianist and music director, was also a student at the RSAMD, which is where the duo met.  In 2001 they started working for the charity 'Music in Hospitals', giving concerts together all over Scotland.  They are delighted to have this chance to perform in Finzean - having spent several years of her childhood living at East Lodge, Kirsty never misses a chance to get back to 'The Fair Place'.

What's on at Easter?

Agape Meal - Thursday 1 April, 7.30pm

in the Meeting Room

To mark the night when Jesus shared his last supper with his disciples and was betrayed and arrested in Gethsemene, you are invited to share in a real light supper that becomes the start of an informal service commemorating these events and includes the Sacrament of Communion.

We gather around set tables, and share in the food and refreshments kindly supplied and served by ladies of the Social Committee.

In previous years this service has been shaped in a way dependant upon numbers attending. This year the format will change to avoid this, but will still focus around the events of that decisive moment in the life of Jesus.

Meditations at the Cross

Good Friday, 2 April, 7.30pm                                                   in the Church

In the evening of the day that Jesus died, you are invited to come to the cross and reflect and worship upon that singular event in human history that is said to convey to humankind a revelation of the true nature and character of God, and which has healed and restored God to humanity.

We gather around the cross and through hymns, readings, reflections and prayers we allow the event to speak to us in our present situations.

Resurrection Joy

Easter Day, 4 April, 9am                                                      at Finzean Village Hall,                                          and 11am at the Church

Thanks to the generous giving of time and talent of  members of the congregation, you are once again invited to celebrate Easter Day by sharing in a Family Breakfast. Beginning with a short informal act of worship, we then enjoy a cold and hot breakfast around the tables. For the children there is an Easter Egg Hunt in the grounds outside.

We would encourage you to come and join in this once-a-year occasion and help create its unique atmosphere before we gather at the Church for worship.

The service at 11am will be a joyous celebration of that event which created the Christian faith in the risen Jesus Christ. As this year Easter falls on the first Sunday of a month it will also include the Sacrament of Communion.

“What-If-They-All-Came-To-Church” Sunday

Sunday, 18 April  marks to the day the 25th anniversary of our minister’s Ordination to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament, who has served this parish for over 15 of those years.

Jack has often said that he looks out at the congregation on a Sunday and no matter who is there, he always notices who is not there that week. We live in a parish where work and family commitments, holidays, sickness, the weather can impact on the make-up of the congregation any given Sunday.

So Jack has often asked the question, “What would the congregation look like if they ALL turned up?”

So to mark his anniversary this is what Jack is requesting, that everyone who normally worships at Birse and Feughside will try—if humanly possible—to attend the service on that day.

The Social Committee have kindly agreed to mark the occasion with a lunch afterwards.

Living the Story

How can we live the Story, if we don’t know the Story?

As Christians we are expected to live -
by faith in God, as our Father,
through following the Way of Jesus Christ,
in the power of the Holy Spirit -
together in community and as witnesses in the world.

God’s dealings with the world from creation to consummation begins with the ancient history of Israel,
reaching a focus in the person of Jesus of Nazareth
and from there expanding globally
with the formation of the Church.

This divine activity is recorded
in various forms  of human writings
that were composed over a thousand years
and finally bound into one book in the 4th century.

Throughout the Christian era this book – the Bible-
has been regarded as telling The Story of God.
Knowing that Story enables Christians to live the Story
in their own place in the world.

The following Sessions are intended to help members
of this church (and beyond) to know the Story
so that they can better live the Story.

They will be repeated each week at different times.
